Easy navigation is part of a good web design

The best way for you to get an idea of a good web design is to look at the web design whilst envisioning yourself as a visitor to the website. On doing this, you get an idea of the weak and good points of the web design, and why you like it.

There are numerous factors contributing to a good website design like:

• Easy navigation: with easy navigation, you have to use navigation buttons and bars in the web design that are easy to use, and understand. There is no point in just making the home page easily surfed; it should be consistent throughout the website.



• The navigation bars you use in the website should give the visitor an idea as to which web page of the site they are visiting. If you have to use frames in the website, it is better to use them only if they are not obtrusive. If you need a large website, it is better to have an index or site map introduced in the website for easy navigation.



• Text: it is only with the right usage of text will you be able to get the message of your website across to all visitors. Though you will have to use large text in the site, make sure it is only large enough to read and not too big. The background of the website should be of a colour that does not clash with the colour of the text. The information you produce on the website should be hierarchal correct. The web design should have columns of text that are narrower than the columns found in books as this makes reading easier.



• Graphics: the graphics in your web design should have an alt label and a matching text link for faster downloading of the website. Use colours in the graphics and backgrounds so that they are browser-safe. Avoid using large buttons in your web design. The animated graphics used in the web design should all turn off by themselves.



• Links: the colours you use for the links in your web design should be so that they coordinate well with the colours of your web pages.  If the links are of a colour that blends with the web page colours, it will not be easily visible to the visitors. Similarly, links with colours that clash with the colours in the web design tend to clash, and may only irritate the visitor. To make the links more visible to visitors, you could consider underlining them too.



• General web design: the basic features to incorporate in your website would be to use web pages that download quickly. Remember, not all visitors have the time and patience to wait for minutes together for a web page to download. The fist page and home page of your website should all fit into 640 x 460 pixel space.



• The other web pages of the website should provide a visual impact in 640 x 460 pixels. You can break large areas of text and the monotony of the web design by incorporating photos, sub heads and pull quotes in the web pages. Make sure that the web pages of the website all look like they belong to the same site with perhaps the usage of repetitive elements in the pages.
