What is Pay Per Click Advertising?
A pay per click program (also known as ppc) is a type of advertising tool that is used in advertising networks as well as search engines and content websites where you get paid by advertisers such as Google Adsense when a visitor actually clicks on an ad that is posed by you. By clicking on the link the user can visit the advertiser’s website and get more information about the advertiser.
The advertisers begin to bid on important keywords that they think the visitors would normally search for products and services in their search engines. When a user types of keyword that he is looking for the advertiser’s ad is normally shown on website that the user visits. These ads are normally known as sponsored links or sponsored ads and appear near the actual results shown to the user. As a result the user gets interested in the ad and clicks on it to get more information.
The ads also appear on sites specially dedicated to content networks. Content network sites like Google Adsense and Yahoo Publisher network are most sought after by advertisers as well as pay per click campaigners. The above two content network sites along with Microsoft adCenter are the largest network operators in their category in the year 2007.
The minimum price per click normally starts at 0.01 USD and it may go up to 0.50 USD. These prices can be termed as cost per click prices. These prices depend on the popularity of the search engines that people use for searching something as well as the keywords used for searching. Hence search terms that are very popular may cost more. In the past there were many frauds regarding automatic click programs, however Google and other search engines have managed to bring the matter under control.
Regarding history of the pay per click management programs, it was in the year 1998 that Jeffrey Brewer who was a part of Goto.com presented a PPC concept model to the TED8 conference that was held in California. There were similar events that soon followed giving rise to the popular pay per click system. However major amount of credit for the PPC program is given to Goto.com’s founder, Bill Gross.
Popular search engines like Google soon cashed in on the revenue generating opportunities in December 1999. However the PPC system was launched on a wide scale only in October 2000. Other search engines like Yahoo and Microsoft soon followed with their own PPC programs by the name of Yahoo Search Marketing and Microsoft adCentre respectively.
Today you may find people who earn full time revenues through pay per click programs. However pay per click advertising programs may take a lot of time and effort to develop in the beginning but once you get the hang of it and learn the nuances you can make a couple of hundred dollars each week. It is necessary to research all information that you can ever find before delving any further in pay per click marketing programs.
