Record Traffic Gaining Ground

January has shown a huge traffic increase related to the US presidential elections as well as some celebrity on-dits. This increase in the newspapers online traffic seems to be affecting several of the top sites. The Associated Newspapers website has also seen an aggressive increase in their visitors.

Record Traffic for Celebrity and Presidential News – Part 1

January has seen record traffic for certain websites relating to the news. It seems the US presidential election, the death of Heath Ledger, and the Britney Spear’s problems have been creating record traffic on the internet sites in the UK. Mail online is just one place that saw a huge amount of traffic during the month, in which their user numbers jumped to 164%, which is 17.903.172 total visitors for last month. The Audit Bureau of Circulations Electronic figures have also been published to show the huge jump in traffic for the UK newspaper sites.

Asda Boosting Presence

Asda, the supermarket chain, has decided they need to increase their presence on the internet. Asda wants to get their search engine optimisation up and therefore they have chosen to partner with Greenlight. Precision Marketing, which is Wal-mart owned has called Greenlight one of the best SEO firms on the market. Wal-mart has also decided to use the Greenlight Company to boost their ratings on the internet for travel, entertainment, and electrical brands.

Yahoo Rejects Microsoft in Favour of Buying Maven

Yahoo just announced that they were not going to take Microsoft’s offer for a buyout. Instead in a surprise move they bought out Maven Networks Inc. for $160 million. The idea is that Yahoo will take over Maven as it is an online video advertiser and create a major marketing coup in being able to supply videos and other media. Maven is located in Cambridge Massachusetts where they deliver video and ads for several media companies such as News Corps Fox News, Sony Pictures and CBS’s sports. The deal was announced just a day after the refusal of Microsoft’s offer for a takeover of $44.6 billion. Microsoft instead announced that they would be buying out Danger Inc. This is a Palo Alto company for mobile handsets.

Mobile Moves with Top Search Engines

Two of the top search engines have been competing in the mobile world for the accounts being offered. Mobile phones need search engines in order to help their customers as they are on their phones. Some of the companies are offering to partner with Google or Yahoo depending on the company in order to get the search engine.

Google Tries to Help Out Yahoo

Google has offered to create an advertising tie up that would allow Yahoo to be less of a target for the buyout Microsoft has offered. Yahoo was unreceptive to Google’s offer however. Yahoo have thought about outsourcing their search advertising with Google, but it seems the arrangements in the directors minds is not as great as one would hope. While it would solve some of Yahoo’s problems with cash Yahoo is still reluctant to take the offer on.

Google and the Mobile Market

Danger Inc. Purchased by Microsoft

The question is does Microsoft’s recent buy of Danger Inc thumb their nose at Apple and Google? Danger is the maker of T- Mobile Sidekick Qwerty smartphone. T- Mobile just signed a deal with Yahoo that the search engine is going to be the major player for their 11 European countries.

In other words Yahoo just landed the deal away from Google to have their search engine used as the default page on the mobile phones. Sidekicks are a flip up screen mobile phone that has a keyboard underneath that makes it a lot better for texting and emails.
