A Guide to Link Building with Digg – Part 5

October 21, 2008 by Admin

SEO and Spam

There is a very important rule to the Digg site. You can’t be a spammer. A spammer would be someone miss using Digg. In fact a lot of the search engine optimisation blogs have already been taken off of Digg because of the spam qualities they offer. You can’t use Digg for your stories just to gain a place to sell your goods or promote your site. You can certainly offer the site information and a little about it, but Digg is more about friends. So any posts you make regarding Digg should be news worthy. They need to be interesting and important.

If users tag you as a spammer eventually Digg will kick you out. Your domain will be banned. Don’t let that happen. You need to avoid SEO as much as possible in order to stay on the front page and in the good graces of the Digg site and its users. Topics can vary, but here are a few things that Diggers love to read about.

Digg
Photography
Linux
Apply
Ajax
News- Politics, Iraq, etc.
Gaming
Alternative Energy

Within the above topics that we have offered you do need to offer certain articles. For example, in gaming you want the latest news regarding gaming options. You can mention hot new sites, new games, or new consoles. You can even offer guides for help in the gaming genre. For the other topics you have a wide range of options to go down. For alternative energy consider the many ways how to get off of oil dependence and more. These topics are going to be popular.

In fact the best thing you can do when you are looking for a topic is see what the top front page stories were in the last day, 30 days, and what falls in the “Sort by Most Diggs.” These areas will help you gain knowledge of what makes the front page so you can be there.

You still need to be careful when you create your stories. A hundred links on a topic that doesn’t apply to what you sell can be bad. It will skew your profile. However you still need to gain top stories on Digg to get links. It is a medium you have to play for. You need the links to be clear to the search engine, so any topic you choose should come back around to your site. For example, instead of writing about alternative energy for a car when you sell baby clothing, talk about alternative energy as it applies to the home and how with a baby you need to look at different energy options. The cost of having a child, using more electricity because of the child, etc. can all lead to the topic of alternative energy choices. This can help improve the type of links you get.

Keywords will be extremely important to your cause. The more keywords you use that relate to your actual site the better off you will be, but you don’t want to go overboard either. The keywords need to make sense or the content will not be rated very high.

The other thing about the links you create on Digg for your product site is that the links are natural. A 100 natural links are a lot better than 100 artificial links that are created. If you want better ranking sometimes off topic and natural links are the best way to go.

You need to avoid making it look like all you do is submit your own content. You need to make your Digg name different from your business or domain name as well. Those who stick too close to their website name will find they are getting less and may get banned. You should have a friend or coworker submit your page as well. This helps you get your stories out there and to your site without you being the direct link.
