AT&T has purchased a search firm called Ingenio. Ingenio is a pay per call search business that started up in 1999. The small business was bought out by AT&T. This means they will have a new ad platform. Ingenio is a pay per call business where businesses are able to generate and track phone leads from ads. In other words when a company uses this system they are getting charged per phone call a customer makes when they click on the ad. Ingenio used published phone numbers to track the calls. Then the ad fees were added up and the businesses would have to pay.
In other words when a business buys an ad on Ingenio’s pay per call network it is shown in web search results. Usually this was displayed in Internet Yellow Pages, Mobile Search, free directory assistance, and podcasts. In some cases the ad could be seen on AOL, Infospace.com, switchboard.com. and magic yellow. Basically the ad would usually read a 1-800 number for someone to click on. This toll free number would then be answered by someone at the business to provide further information regarding the ad.
