Basic Qualities That Good Web Designers Should Have

April 12, 2008 by Admin

Description: Even the best designers often get caught in the pitfalls of web design. By offering tips to avoid these common pitfalls, web designers can be saved from committing these common errors.

Everyone can be prone to commit mistakes because no one is born perfect. That is a reality that we can accept, but for web designers – doing a bad job can ruin their portfolio and can diminish the number of clients who would want to acquire their services.

hat is great about committing mistakes is that you can actually learn from them. When you do something that is not right, you can have the ability to correct them when a similar scenario comes around in the future. Luckily, for web designers, a website can be edited out and polished to the satisfaction of clients before publishing them out in the virtual world.

Billions upon billions of web pages ever published, it would not be difficult to point out results of a bad web design jobs. Just try to explore Myspace profiles and you’ll definitely see the amateurish concept of web design working well for a lot of teenagers. However, even good web designers cannot be immune in making websites that has too much flaws. With this, here are some tips that would point out common pitfalls that web designers commit:

1. Information overload. The most common mistake that web designers commit is dumping all unnecessary information in the landing page of a website. With too many links and too many web resources offered by websites like Yahoo, everything seems too cluttered and online visitors might not find anything helpful at all. Savvy web designers should learn how to cut down and organise everything in separate links. In this case, the flow of information can be smoothly accessed because all clutter is cleaned up and organised.

2. Forgetting flexibility. Most amateur web designers usually think what they see in their computer screens is the actual visual representation of what other people can see on their monitors. This is actually a wrong notion because we know that people can actually visit a website using a PDAs or cellular phones that has smaller screens. When building a website, you must consider designing one that is flexible, portable and accessible to online visitors who have different browsers, operating systems, and computer platforms. Seasoned web designers test their websites using different environments so that they can experience every possible “look” and “feel” of their website. With this, they can easily tweak improvements to cater the needs of virtually all users of their website.

3. Those Pesky Typos. Avoiding typographical errors can be the job of the content writer, but web designers should double check these errors because it can ruin the overall impression of the website. Usually, online users would not trust a website that is full of typos. This means that your website can lose the confidence of online visitors because they feel your website does not have the capability of using a simple spell-check program.

4. Ignoring interaction. What is great about the Internet is that it connects people and this interaction should be a prime consideration when building a website. This is why web designers should not forget to put “contact us” icons in their every website because it enables their visitors to quickly interact and ask questions to the entity represented by the website. Allowing easy navigation and accessibility of information is also what web designers should remember to deliver a great job.
