Building a Search Engine Friendly Website - Part 5

Don’t Offer Pointless Links

Session ID’s, Calendar links, and other links are seen as pointless options by the search engine spiders when they are on the crawl. In other words you risk making pointless pages for the search engine to reject as it looks through your website for proper content.

You also offer the option of a different web page or URL actually for the spider to find the next time it does a search. This means if it hits on the session ID page you will lose rank rather than gaining it if the spider hits on your actual home page. When they encounter too many links or URL’s the spiders spend a lot of time trying to index useless information.

You should also stay away from complicated links or URL’s. Anything that is long or has a lot of symbols in it is going to get a lower ranking. This is because the search engine can’t tell what content it is looking at. If you use a short and descriptive URL the search engine is going to know what is on that page and offer a better ranking. A subdirectory is better than a sub- domain when you create your web page.
