The British Broadcasting Centre (BBC) have announced that they will be including links to other broadcasters on their catch up TV service BBC iPlayer.

This means that users could potentially search for a show like Skins (Channel 4) abd they will be immediately linked to channel 4’s equivalent 4OD service.

There will also be some new editions coming with the release of iPlayer 3.0 including a more comprehensive programme guide that will include other channels and a new search results service.

The new 3.0 iPlayer, expected at the end of June will also make personalised recommendations based on the users viewing habits.

Along with this the BBC also announced that the player will soon be fully integrated with social networking sites Twitter and Facebook and also the inclusion of instant messaging chat technology from Microsoft sounds an interesting eventuality.

Users will now be able to see what their friends have watched and what they recommend along with having the ability to sync iPlayer so that they can talk about programs whilst they are being watched.

Users will have to sign into the iPlayer if they wish to use certain features and a new individual BBC ID will need to be created.

The new service will also allow users to book programmes for future download so that they can record an entire series much like SKY’S “SKY plus” box.

It sounds as though the new iPlayer will be a completely free all encompassing TV service accessed from our computers, allowing users to connect with friends whilst watching their favourite programmes from a range of channels, exciting times ahead for free view TV on the computer.
