Following announcements that Nokia executives are undergoing a restructure, the organisation have released three new smartphones which they are confident will place them back at the top of the telecommunications market. The organisation has pledged to fight hard on behalf of customers, in an increasingly competitive market.

The new phones (E7, C7 and an updated C6) were unveiled at the Nokia World conference in London. It is thought that they will go some way to beat competition by rival organisations RIM, Google and Apple. A spokesperson from the firm, Niklas Savander, conceded that Nokia have been struggling to stay ahead of the market.

Savander commented: “That is about to change. Today we shift into high gear in Nokia’s fight back to smartphone leadership. In the last quarter people bought more Nokia smartphones than Apple and Android combined. We do not aim to copy our rivals. Offering people just one model will inevitably lead to compromises.”

“We will continue to offer a range of devices to meet different needs, tastes and budgets. We will continue to expand the availability of smartphone features because everyone – not just the well off – deserve access to the Internet. We are not going to apologise for not being Apple, Google or Samsung. We are Nokia. It is about three words: Nokia is back.”

Nokia has lost a fourteen percent market share over the past year, despite still owning half the market in a number of European countries. Nokia currently sell approximately 250,000 smartphones every day. Savander commented: “That’s more smartphone sales than any other company by far. Period.”

Nokia’s new smartphone products look set to provide a much-needed boost to their ailing market share, by placing their product suite up there with rivals such as Apple and Google.

For the second time this week, telecommunications giants Nokia have hit the news headlines following an announcement that another high-ranking executive has tendered their resignation. The news comes just days after chief executive Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo resigned from his position, which he has held since 2006, to be replaced by Stephen Elop from Microsoft.

The head of Nokia’s mobile division, Anssi Vanjjoki will be leaving his role just months after being appointed to it. Vanjoki issued a statement commenting: “I felt the time has come to seek new opportunities in my life. At the same time, I am 100% committed to doing my best for Nokia until my very last working day.”

The announcement follows a blog post with the executive wrote following his appointment in July, which stated his commitment to supporting Nokia to improve in the smartphone market: “It’s my aim to ensure Nokia stays as the market and intellectual leader in creating the digital world. I’m under no illusions; it’s no small task. I am committed, perhaps even obsessed, with getting Nokia back to being number one in high-end devices. Achieving this will require performance and efforts over and above the norm. This is a role I’ve personally been preparing for over the last 20 years.”

Vanjoki will serve a notice period of six months, meaning he will have been in the role for less than a year before leaving to a new position elsewhere.

The announcement follows the appointment of Mr. Elop, as the first non-Finn to take up an executive position within Nokia. The shake-up within the company is thought to follow difficulties that Nokia have been having in penetrating and succeeding within the smartphone market, with stiff competition from the Apple iPhone and Google’s Android operating system. Both of these firms are enjoying a gradual increase in market share as Nokia struggled to maintain their lead in the industry.

It is thought that the changes will lead to further management positions being vacated and replaced over the next few weeks, as the company seeks to find the best possible team to lead them in to a new era of development and improvement.

Nokia and Yahoo! announced on Monday a strategic alliance around e-mail, mapping and instant messaging services.

The deal will see Nokia become the exclusive global provider of Yahoo’s maps and navigation services, under the branding ‘powered by Ovi’ that many users have probably seen on TV adverts.

Yahoo will similarly power Nokia’s Ovi chat and Ovi mail services with its own messenger and mail products.

Nokia chief executive Olli-Petska Kallusvuo said in a statement that the alliance was primarily intended to span mobile and online markets and to let Yahoo customers in areas such as North America, an area that has been a notoriously difficult market for Nokia, discover the unique and varied capabilities that Ovi maps can bring.

As part of the agreement between the companies Nokia and Yahoo said that they are planning to work on ID federation between their services.

The first signs of the coalition will allow users to log in to Yahoo services using their Ovi users id’s.

Speaking at a press conference to announce the partnership, Yahoo! CEO Carol Bartz revealed: “Many of you know we haven’t been focused a lot on our maps platform. This changes that.

“By using Nokia’s maps and Navteq services, it will be a much richer experience for users.”

“For us, this alliance has an especially important application in the developing world,” Bartz said.

“Nokia has by far the strongest track record in these markets and now Yahoo! gets to leverage that position.”

The companies have both stated that some of the co-branded services will become available in the second half of this year whilst the rest o the world will be targeted next year.
