Cheap iPhone to hit U.S by Christmas?
Yesterday we wrote about a rumour that Walmart, the US’s biggest supermarket is planning to sell a 4MB iPhone for only $99. Well, that rumour is picking up some serious staem, with no less a publication than the New York Post quoting various Walmart employees as stating that the $99 dollar phone will be with them by the end of the year. Walmart themselves are saying nothing. However, with the buzz around this story, it’s hard to believe that there’s no truth at all in it.
The price tag of $99 is the main thing here, it represents a pricing and marketing strategy that’s far more aggressive than usual for Apple, who are often squeamish about price slashes. If this rumour is true, it certainly is a ‘slash’ – the 4MB iPhone has been on the market before, costing about four times as much as it is supposed to be sold for in Walmart.
Unfortunately for us, the promotion, if it happens at all, is likely to only be offered in Walmart stores in the US. Although, it’s worth remembering that Walmart owns Asda and numerous other brands. It’s not inconceivable that we could see Apple promotions like this on this side of the Atlantic in the new year. Here’s hoping anyway.
