When asked about his opinion regarding new media platforms for 2008, Tobaccowala was extremely enthusiastic about Internet mapping and the way Google maps have developed. A user of the service himself, he uses the Internet function on his Apple iPhone to get the directions he need or the telephone number he wants. To him, 411 is an obsolete telephone number.
He enjoys seeing the variety of marketing messages that appears on his phone when he uses the mapping services and sees this as a tool that could be utilized by local businesses in the service area. He also predicts that this particular function, regardless of it is powered by Google or some other search engine, like Nokia’s newest acquisition Navteq, will eventually spread out to GPS devices and laptops.
He also sees opportunities to use social media as a way for marketers to promote their wares. He claims that they are wary of it due to consumer stalking but feels that it could be used in innovative ways once the marketers become more comfortable with the idea. He is very interested in finding these ways and introducing the technologies that can be used to leverage the social media while comforting the sellers at the same time.
