Denuo’s Tobaccowala - Part 6
When asked about the recent backtracking of Facebook, a popular social site, on Beacon and how it related to a privacy backlash, Tobaccowala pointed out that everyone needs to remember that consumers are also people who like to know three things when it comes to their use of the Internet.
Everyone wants to know what everyone else knows about them. They want to correct or eliminate what everyone knows about them. Everyone has the innate need to use that information. He goes on to state that the backtracking that happened was after the first version of Beacon was updated. Prior to that, people were not aware that information was being saved and they couldn’t opt out of it, basically passing demographic information on by word of mouth. He feels that it’s more important that a consumer bought something than the fact they found the product on Facebook or some other site where it was advertised.
By using search engines, everyone benefits from having the information at your fingertips for free in an easy and concise format to use. He stated that the benefits consumers receive are the information and items specifically targeted to them and nothing more. It has less to do with any financial benefits that are exchanged and more to do with the fact that people are getting what they want.
