Designing a Top Ranking Web Page – Part 2

26/08/08 6:57 AM

Let’s take a look at why knowing the algorithms used for Google, MSN, and Yahoo wouldn’t really help you get the page rankings you need. This way you can understand the process you need to use in order to get the top rankings.

First the formulas to rank pages will change. They have to because every month there are new web pages. Google also likes to shake things around to keep giving an edge to websites. The new elements offered in page ranking and programs mean that the algorithms will change. Web pages will be added to the top list while others sink in ranking. The index will also be relevant. A lot of the time the search engine will consider the index to be full of spam.

Take a look at how you have built your own internal search engine, if you have one. You know that there is going to be a control panel, dials, and other factors for the rankings you choose. The larger search engines have much more to deal with than you do regarding the rankings. So if you had the same amount you need a program to work swiftly culling out the unimportant sites.

The search engines might look at the titles tags, but then the next time they will look at your keyword placement. It just depends on whether the anchor text, keywords, or title is what the search engine is looking for that day to determine where a page will rank. For example, paid links used to be the method for getting a better page ranking. However, now you are being warned against the paid links because this might not have any relevance to your site. The site relevance is extremely important to ranking. If the page isn’t relevant to your site that you are linking to it will consider it spam or even worse a nonessential link that gets you a deduction or penalty on the ranking. Part of the reason the search engines started to narrow down the information they look at was because of the over abundance of paid links. The subdomain in the search engine was getting too full and therefore the page rankings were harder to approach.

There is another reason that you don’t need to learn the algorithms. The rankings will depend on the search being done. For example a search for keyword topic might be different than a data center search. Likewise when you search from a specific location the search might yield different results. The search engines have web pages for specific countries like the UK and the US. If you search in one you will get different pages than in the other. It also is determined by whether you are signed into a specific account with a search engine. Lastly there are new features being created that change the rankings. The point is there are too many variables and definite changes that make it hard to track through the algorithms to be learned and be successful for creating your site.

Ask yourself if search queries should be treated the same. For example you might be looking at travel or languages. Would it make sense for the search engine to rank them the same? Consider this language such as computer programming languages might yield less search results than travel. There are hundreds of travel sites and a great many of them offer the same type of information. Can you truly rank the pages the same as you would for the language option?

The answer is pretty simple. The search engines would require different algorithms for different topics. The users expect to have different results for different topics. This means that each topic needs to be considered for spam, relevancy, and be able to offer them in the way a user would find them convenient. A searcher is not going to want to look through all hundred million results just to find the one they need. It should be on the first page.

The results therefore need to be created not only for the topic, but also for the country as we mentioned above. Search engines have history features that allow for a searcher to look back at what they have searched before and go to it again. The point is still that the search engine must make the results relevant and un- time consuming to satisfy the needs of their consumer base.
Search engines are also going to be looking for new ways to make the results better. This means that the titles need to be in tune with the new search ways, but it also means that if they are not you are going to end up in the subdomain. You may never get the ranking back in this case. So the ranking math is going to vary and it is hard to say what will really be getting your page up there when you consider the algorithms.

So instead of using the algorithms to find the answer you should concentrate on other aspects of page ranking. The search engine is going to be looking for a few different things. This is why you need to look from the point of view of the search engine. You need to know what types of pages will rank higher. A lot of the times the search engine will offer this information. We have a couple of suggestions for SEO or Search Engine Optimization. The SEO is the smart approach to getting the page ranking that you need.

To be successful in the page ranking you need to have a web page that will be search engine friendly. In other words the search engine can become confused if you don’t provide the proper materials for it to crawl through. This means that you lose out on the index and get a lower page ranking. So instead of paying attention to the algorithms there are other things to consider, which we will get to shortly.

The target for the keywords you use with the web page are also highly important. You don’t want to use keywords that aren’t going to bring in the money customers. In other words, if you use the wrong keywords you could be attracting the wrong target. So the keywords should be for a specific target audience.

In general the keywords that are too broad or specific are going to eliminate your consumers because of the lower page ranking. With page ranking the search engines know some of the keywords. There are even tools by the search engines that help you to find the keywords you are going to use. These tools will make it easier to make sure that you have the right words rather than the wrong ones for your website pages. There is nothing worse than having a word that is too unique to be counted.
Lastly the relevant links are something that needs to look natural. In other words the links you use should in some way be based on the keywords you have on your site and the products you sell. You don’t want the keywords or links to look like ads.

There are ten different elements for on-page SEO. These elements should be learned and referenced each time you create a web site or page. We have listed all of these aspects below to help you have a more successful website. They will tell you most of what you need to know about ranking, where in looking at the math is not going to help you.
