Gathering Links for SEO – Part 2

September 27, 2008 by Admin

Linkbaiting is like the online version of gossip with advertising. 6 Characteristics You Need To Know:

1) First, to be a linkbait strategist you need to be able to create a valuable content resource. In other words you have a lot of information in one report. Sometimes the reports will be internal while some with be external. Lists, reports and other things like tools must offer information that is useful and organized. It should also be easy to link with.

Many of the linkbait resources are simple lists and how to offerings. In other words a guide in how to get in the top of search results is going to be imperative to linkbaiting. If the information can be used by a site or several sites that will help the search results.
Your bait doesn’t have to be top notch either. It needs to be useful, but more than that it should be all inclusive in the information offered. A great way to entice more individuals into the link is by having a list. For example the top 10, or top 50, or top 100 etc. with a title that is just as useful will have a person linking to your site more often. This is because they see a useful list.
You also want to use sites like Delicious and Digg for ideas. If you don’t have content that will inspire links you will not get anywhere. These sites can help you on topics to discuss to help with linkbaiting.

2) Those who are really great at linkbaiting will monitor the news. They will look to see what the top stories are and then give their own take on the content. The topic will have to be something that shows professional knowledge and a voice. For example if you do a site with credit cards. You might want to search in Google News for top stories with credit cards. These stories may be fraud, banks struggling, debt issues, or changes companies are making to credit cards. The point is the news you use should in some way relate to your site so that you can rewrite it and get the linkbaiting you need.

3) Another option for you is to look for links in controversial topics. For example finance is a hot topic in the UK right now as in the US. The government has to step in and take control, but this method is fraught with a lot of different opinions. You can be a contrary voice to the topic instead of saying what everyone else does. You can argue a position with your professional knowledge. For example should the government bailout banks? Should the government offer assistance to the foreclosure market on the personal level rather than the banking level? Gas prices are another hot topic to be controversial on. The topic you use of course will need to be relevant to the type of site you have. If you have a financial website than these topics are good. However, for a pet site you might want to find something else.

4) Fear is a powerful motivator. We have all seen how fear can work to get someone to purchase an item. It is a bad business advertisement, but successful. Fear will make a person buy an item. So if you can add to the consumer fear you are helping get more links for your site based on the fact that it will be read. News stories are a great way to use fear.

5) The style of language used will have an impact on the linkbaiting. For example if your content is dry, concise, and baseless you might not get too many hits. However, a bit of humour thrown in and you will definitely be seeing more. Let’s go back to the iPhone example of a while ago. In the video the iPhone is destroyed in a blender. That is humorous to a lot of individuals. As a content writer for your site or even a video artist you have to make sure the humour is there and understood. A comedian approach could be more helpful.

6) Number six is social networking. Social networking has been around for a very long time offline. It is the word of mouth network. So when you are online you need to use the same techniques by going to sites that are social. Digg, Propeller, Delicious, Facebook, etc. are all very social oriented.
