Google enhances search service through Google Instant

September 9, 2010 by Andre

Search engine specialists Google have announced the launch of a speedier, more effective search product called Google Instant. According to the firm, the new product displays returned results instantly, triggered by the user typing within the search bar online. Google have termed the new technology ‘search at the speed of thought.’

Before the release of Google Instant, their search engine operated by people inputting their required search topic and pressing the enter key or clicking the ‘search’ icon. The new technology will be available in the United States and a number of European countries including the UK by the end of the week. The vice president of search products for Google demonstrated the Google Instant technology at a recent event in the US, which showed it returning predicted search results.

A blogger from technology site Technologizer commented on the news: “Google is betting all they have that speed is everything. Saving one or two seconds isn’t that big of a deal. One of my instant thoughts is that I am going to see results I don’t want because until I type enough that it knows what I want, it is going to show me links I am not interested in.”

A second commentator, Robert Scoble added his view: “The new feature will present a real challenge to Microsoft and its search engine Bing, which has been slowly chipping away at Google’s lead in the search market. Playing with it, it dramatically changes the way I do searches. I think it is a pretty major leap forward but this means that Bing becomes far less interesting and they now have to step up.”

Google has calculated than an average online user of their search facility spends approximately nine seconds typing a query, and about fifteen seconds seeking answers to their query. According to the company, the new technology will save up to five seconds off an average search query.
