How long should it take for new links to begin increasing my rankings? - Part 3
Directories:
Let’s look at the other part of your question now. You have submitted to directories in order to gain links. You should find that these directories are listed in the back links that Yahoo has provided. The directories do take a little bit to show up because of the process. The process called spidering allows for the links to make their way into Yahoo and usually takes seven to ten days. You will find until the link has actually made its way back to you and Yahoo you will not be able to count it.
At this point you need to check to make sure that the links have been indexed on all of the major search engines. In order for you to check you will need to go to the search engine page to see if it is listed in the directory. You will search for the URL that should be linked and if it is on the page you will be receiving credit.
To answer the final portion of your question you will find that it usually takes a few days for the indexes to be put in place. This means that once the search engine has indexed the sites you should see a change in your traffic, within the next few days.

I am not an SEO expert, but i thought that it wasn’t necessary anymore to add urls to directories or even search engines (they pick them up, themselves). Is this true (or not?).

It is not necessary to add your urls to search engines as they will find them via links. But Directories are hand edited by humans and therefore you need to submit your site to directories. Some, link Yahoo even charge for this service.
