Link Building on the Web

Link building has changed in the last six years from being able to spam a guestbook with links for your own website to needing a better system. For those of you who have never done link building before, there are traps that you could get into if you’re not careful. Google is using an algorithm in which they determine the legitimacy of the link. They follow the link to determine how the link was actually made. If the link was created using spam techniques are if you purchased the links Google is not going to count them as legitimate in ranking your website. These false links can be a problem for you as the head of the website in that your company will not be able to go further online unless you improve how you prepare for search engine optimisation. Below there are several options for building up your website links.

The first thing you want to do is buy links from websites that have editorial integrity. Instead of buying from a company that you have never heard of and doesn’t promote the control on the links you need to choose someplace like Yahoo! Directory. Google even recommends using the directory for purchasing links. To purchase links you should understand where you are buying it from. In other words browse the pages of the web directory to see the types of links they are selling. If there are a lot of Viagra or Debt Consolidation sites you don’t want to connect to those. This is not editorial integrity, but the opposite.

Varying your anchor text is also a good rule to follow. The idea of anchor text is that you don’t repeat a link. Instead you are trying to purchase links that will help in web hosting. So when you change the anchor text you are using web hosting provider, reliable web hosting, quality web hosting, and other variables.

Non- keyword links are another possibility that you should choose from. Most of the websites on the internet go for the simple links with keywords thinking that will get them more views; however you would actually gain more from the non keyword links if you think about it for just a moment. Most often when you search online the top ten websites are going to have links that don’t contain keywords. Google wants to have websites that offer links that apply to their website over keyword spamming. You want domain authority, not just rank.

In link building there are several terms that can be difficult to understand, but a little research can go a long way. One of the suggestions for link building is to avoid such things as site wide links. A site wide link is a footer link. Unfortunately most ranking looks at those links as spam, and could trip the spam filter regarding your site. Therefore you may want to avoid the link just to keep yourself above reproach.

Page Rank zero can out rank other page ranks. Google has their own system for ranking websites. This ranking can be thwarted if you have a linked t o page rank that is higher than Google. So if you have zero on Google you could still out rank other sites because the linked to page has a better ranking.

Referral log spam, blog comment spam, and automated web directory submission are three ways you could trip yourself up during the link building process. These links are called automated link spamming. Instead of you going out to find the links or post your links you are using automation, which is always seen as spam. These types of links will flag the search engine and Google will then rank you as a spammer. While it is an easy process if can end your link building for legitimacy.

There are other links that you can use such as images and ALT text. These two options allow for a better ranking. First the image and ALT text are not given as much perusal by the search engines as spam. So most often the filters are not activated for you being a spammer. The ALT text is a good thing to use for the anchor text as it is a little different in a text link offering you a better chance to rise on the search engines.

The placement of the link on the website is important as well. Google is not going to give a high ranking for the footer links we spoke about earlier because of where they are on a page. You want the link to be seen by the human and that is how Google ranks the links.

You should never rent links from any source. Google has begun to change how they look at link building to provide strict instructions regarding how they will rank a page. If the link isn’t legitimate or if there is a suspicion regarding the link you will not be given full credit. To gain full credit you need to place a link on a page and leave it there, rather than rent it to get a higher page link for one round.

Lastly if you are building for SEO and especially for a high page rank on Google you should visit the website for gaining links. Google has their own directory of links that they have researched for legitimacy and they have offered a list of places in which you can find links that will fit your needs. The first ten on that list tend to be the best.

When link building it is important to follow steps to gain legitimate links and realise where folly lies. You must understand how the link building works and the algorithm of Google in order to gain the best links for your site. It is better to play their game than to lose your focus by being labelled a spammer even if that was not your intention. Link building is very important, but you must be intelligent regarding the process.
