Making Your URL Work for You – Part 2

September 3, 2008 by Admin

Domain has been talked about a lot, so let’s take a look at what it means. Domain is the name section of the URL. This should be your company name, but more on that in a bit. The domain name is always going to be .something. It can be .com, .org, .gov, etc. The name is translated into an IP address that will connect to the web server. It can also be referred to as the hostname. It just depends on the server you use.

The domain name should be letters, digits, or hyphens, and must be limited to 63 characters. A-Z and 0-9, along with hyphens are the only legal entities allowed in the host name. Let’s go back to the company name. If you can abbreviate the company name into initials or if it is short enough to place as the domain, you should do so. A person will recognize your site by the name, so make it easier on the traffic. Again domains are not case sensitive so you can have upper or lower case words and still access it.

The .com is the Top Level Domain or TLD. There are three types of TLD. You have the generic TLD’s we mentioned above. Then you have the country code and the infrastructure. So if you are going to be on the Google UK page you would not use .com but .co.uk. The infrastructure only has one and that is arpa. The infrastructure for your purposes is unimportant. You only need to concentrate on the generic and country code for SEO purposes.

Next you have the subdirectory. This is what appears as a subdirectory of the web server. In other words it is the section of your web page that the individual found via a search that can lead to your entire site, but directs them to the information they wanted first off.

The filename is the file on the web server. The .html is an extension of the file name. It will tell the individual and the server that the text is written in hypertext markup language. In other words, it is the most basic text you can have on the webpage and it makes it easier to access for the user. You should not think that everything beyond the subdirectory is going to be case sensitive. This means the subdirectory, filename, and extensions all need to be in the proper case to access the page.

Now that you know what the URL breaks down into, let’s get further in depth regarding the SEO tactics you need to use. You must have SEO and marketing strategies to help individuals find your site.
