Subdirectories

The next area to concentrate on for keywords is the subdirectories. If you can’t get your subdomain or domain to encompass a keyword you can use the subdirectory to get the keyword you need. This is a good rule to follow to keep the subdomain and domain shorter, but still have the words you need. You should keep in mind that the subdirectory or file name should have the keyword, but not both. The best URL will allow for either the file name or subdirectory to offer better rankings.

You will have better results as long as the file structure at some part has a keyword or phrase. On the other hand, you need to make sure that the search engine will not find it a false site. This has happened in the past where one too many of the sites was similar within the subdirectory that the search engine was indexing what was supposed to be unique pages and was just a duplicate. You never want a duplicate page because this will now offer penalties.
