Absolute Vs. Relative URLs

There are two other types of URL’s to consider. You have the Absolute which means http://www.domain.com/filename.html. You then have the Relative which is the filename.html. So the entire URL is going to be the absolute portion. The absolute URL is preferred for two reasons. First the links will work if it has been stolen or saved on the desk top. Second the index will not allow for a loop to occur. This means that you don’t get the 404 errors if you have the absolute URL. They are minor considerations, but something that is imperative to know for links and maintaining the web pages.

Imperative Point

The keywords will help in the page rankings. However, you don’t want to change an existing URL without redirection. In other words you need to create a link between the old and the new in order to keep the ranking as well as keep your visitors attune to your page. If you create a break it will be harder to maintain the level you have in page rankings as well as your traffic. Visitors can just assume that you fell off the grid, especially because the search engine can drop your page. To get a high ranking page it must not be changed, unless it is ineffective overall. In other words if you have a URL that is considered spam or offers a low ranking, you can change it as long as the site is redirected. The age of the page is important to the search engines.

The search engine optimization is always changing as new information is created. The search engines are trying to make it easier to find relevant pages for their searchers. This means you have to understand the components of the URL as well as other SEO for marketing strategy. Common sense combined with knowledge should help you create the URL for visitors and the search engine.

The keywords are going to help the search engine rank the page whether you want to be within the fold or not. They set the guidelines you need to pay attention to. The search engine has a point in how they want the URL’s created. It is your mission to make sure you follow this strategy and make it work to the best advantage for you.
