Last week Apple officially revealed the new 4.0 operating system for the iPhone. The highly anticipated update comes hot on the heels of the iPad release and has confirmed many of the rumours that have been going around the internet regarding the new operating system. Unfortunately, however, Apple did not release any information about a new iPhone to go with the operating system.
Apple announced that they will be adding multi-tasking, an e-book reader and a mobile advertising platform to the new operating system. Steve Jobs was evidently well aware that for once Apple were quite behind in terms of the addition of multi-tasking, his response to this was typically confident: “ Whist we may not be the first to the party, we will certainly be the best” suggesting that the technology should work seamlessly.
Jobs claimed that Apple have been working on a way to allow third party applications (those not made by Apple) to multi-task without it slowing the phone down or rapidly draining the battery, this has inevitably been a success.
The bad news is that the new operating system will only work on the iPhone 3Gs, it is too powerful for any previous iPhone and the iPod touch.
Job’s also revealed the addition of iAd’s, a platform that will allow for advertisements to run within any mobile app, so there will be no need to leave the app to view an ad.
Several other interesting features were also announced, including a ‘Gaming Centre’ to allow online gaming, the addition of the iBooks store found on the iPad and a unified e-mail box, exciting times at Apple, the announcement of the new iPhone should hopefully follow shortly.
