In a move that will delight webmasters and developers, Royal Mail has promised to give away postcode data for free. The move is part of the organisations commitment to make more use of technology and the internet to help transform their services. This is particularly important for ecommerce sites, who often use post codes to predict the full addresses of users, taking a valuable step out of the payment process, which as anyone who’s worked in ecommerce knows, is the best way to lower your number of abandoned carts.
Currently webmasters who want to make use of postcode data in their site builds have to pay for the privilege, though that will be a thing of the past when, after a brief consultation the data becomes available in April. In addition, the government is also consulting on the possibility of making ordinance survey mapping information available.
Basically, this is a win win. It’ll make internet users lives easier as no one likes filling out endless forms and it’ll make it easier for ecommerce vendors to make money by simplifying the process.
The postcode plan is a small part of the government’s overall intentions to move all government services online.
