Shipping date for iPad delayed again

It looks like more bad news for customers in the UK awaiting the arrival of the much anticipated iPad as Apple have announced delays.

Apple has warned all customers in the UK who have not yet placed an order for an iPad that if their order has been placed after May 14th they will not receive their device until at least June 7th. The official Apple website, which is currently taking iPad pre-orders, is now listing the shipping date for the touch-screen, tablet-style device as June 7th rather than the end of May as was expected.

However, Apple has confirmed that those customers who have already pre-ordered the iPad would still receive it on May 28th, the promised day of launch. The shipping delay is rumoured to be as a result of huge demand for the iPad in the UK; industry experts believe that Apple has sold out of its initial iPad allocation, and the delay will give them more time to get new units shipped from overseas factories to customers.

Apple has already pushed back the UK launch of the iPad once, citing “overwhelming” demand for the device in the United States as the main reason for the delay.

The iPad will start from £429 when it goes on sale in the UK, £70 more than in the US, with models that combine Wi-Fi web browsing with 3G internet access costing significantly more. Several major network operators, including O2, Orange and Vodafone, have already released details of their data tariffs, which will allow people to surf the internet using the mobile phone network if they sign up to a data package from one of these providers.

Apple sold a million iPads in just 28 days in the United States, and the device is expected to be equally popular in the UK and other countries when it goes on sale later this month.

Apple finally announce iPad pricing and pre-order date in the UK

Apple announced last week that they are now accepting pre-orders for the iPad in the UK after having delayed its release for almost a month.

The tablet computer will go on sale from May 28th (hopefully) after having proved exceedingly popular in the US with sales hitting the 1 million mark just last week.

Just like our American counterparts iPad customers in the UK will be able to choose between 2 different models Wi-Fi only or the recently released Wi-Fi and 3G model that allows mobile internet access from wherever you are much like the iPhone.

The iPad will come in three different hardrive capacities much like the iPod Touch in 16gb, 32gb and 64gb giving the user a choice to spend less if they plan to store less on their iPad.

UK prices have been quite a surprise, and not the good kind of surprise as they are a fair bit higher than in the US.

It was predicted that the iPad would retail here for the same amount as it does in the US but instead it will start at £429 compared to the $499 (£355) that the same model sells for in the US. Apple’s excuse for this was “VAT reasons” but a £74 difference just for tax does seem a bit steep.

A lot of prospective iPad customers in the UK have been waiting with baited breath to see how much our major mobile network operators will be charging for 3G data price plans, well the wait is over as this information has also been released.

O2 will charge users £10 per month for 1GB of data use, £15 per month for 3GB of data use, or £2 per day for up to 500MB of data use. Orange will charge £2 per day for up to 200MB of data use, £7.50 per week for up to 1GB of data, £15 per month for up to 3GB of data use, or £25 per month for up to 10GB of data. Vodafone is charging customers £10 for up to 250MB of data per month, or £25 per month for up to 5GB of data use.

If a user is already on one of the above networks with their iPhone they will be able to add the iPad data package of their choice onto their current iPhone bill and will in-turn receive a mini sim-card from the network that allows 3G use.

Many market analysts are predicting the iPad to be just as big a hit here as in the US despite the higher prices, the wait is almost over.

Apple iPad sales top 1 million in record time

After all the hype in the first quarter of the year over Apple’s iPad tablet computer the question as to whether or not it will be a success or a rare Apple flop would appear to have been answered as the company have announced that they have reached the 1 million sales milestone.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs pointed out that 1 million iPads in 28 days is 8 weeks less than it took the iPhone to reach this plateau as the popular smart phone took a still fairly impressive 74 days.

The success story is somewhat bittersweet for international customers itching to get their hands on an iPad as its popularity shows that it is evidently a worthwhile purchase but it also impedes the worldwide release as Apple look to satisfy the American market first as supply continues to be out done by demand;.

Sales through the iPads App store have also been booming as over 12 million apps have already been downloaded and the iBook store has sold a massive 1.5 million digital editions in the first 4 weeks.

Apple have also been boosted by the fact that the most popular apps downloaded so far are those made by the company themselves as Apple’s very own Office suite; Keynote, Numbers and Pages lead the way in app downloads for the iPad.

So it would seem for now we will have to continue to gaze across the pond at our American counterparts as they continue to tease the rest of the world by telling us just how popular the iPad is and just how much longer we will have to wait to get one.

International launch of iPad delayed by a month

There is good news and bad news for anyone outside the US that has been waiting for the release of the iPad at the end of this month. The bad news is that you are going to be waiting a bit longer, the good news is that it is because the iPad is so popular in the US meaning that is must be good, right?

Apple have announced that they have delayed the international launch of the iPad by a month due to overwhelming demand in the US. The tablet computer was originally supposed to go on sale at the end of April in the UK but this has been pushed back until the end of May.

It is not only us in the UK that have to stomach the bad news, we can seek comfort in the fact that we are not alone as Canada, France, Italy, Germany, Japan, Australia, Switzerland and Spain will all have to wait with us.

The company released a press release this week: “Although we have delivered more than 500,000 iPads during the first week, demand is far higher than we predicted and will likely continue to exceed our supply over the next several weeks as more people see and touch an iPad.”

The pre-order date has been pushed back to May 10th which is the same date that Apple are planning to release pricing information for the product.

Whilst the rest of the world will be quite disappointed by this news it is evidently positive for Apple as the delay represents the products popularity and will increase hysteria amongst the other nations waiting for it which could possibly boost sales when it does eventually come out.

This delayed release has been predicted by analysts in recent weeks after demand in the US was so high on the iPad’s release, any further delays are also a possibility, be warned.

Teething problems already for the Apple iPad

Not even a full week after its much anticipated release in the US Apple have been bombarded with complaints regarding its revolutionary iPad. Hundreds of iPad owners this week are claiming that they cannot connect to the internet properly on their device, a problem that would render it almost useless.

Forums and message boards have popped up all over the internet discussing the problem with users complaining that they will always lose Wi-Fi signal whenever they move a short distance away from their router. With Apple claiming that the iPad has a powerful wireless network adapter built in this is not good news.

The company have made some fairly obvious suggestions at fixing the problem on their support pages, advising users to perhaps move closer to the Wi-Fi hot spot which sort of defeats the object of the whole ‘wireless internet’ experience. Unbelievably they have also suggested that users ensure that their router is on and providing a wireless signal which would surely be the first thing that even the less tech savvy user would do.

The problem has not occurred with all iPad’s however, just an unlucky few hundred that appear to have faulty devices. It is more then likely a software issue rather then a problem with the hardware itself.

Apple will not want this problem to persist and will hopefully have it sorted before they release the iPad worldwide so expect a software update

Apple iPad sells 300,000 on debut weekend

After months of speculations last year it was finally announced, now after weeks of excitement and debate the iPad has arrived. Technology sites, blogs and forums are all overflowing with information about Apple’s revolutionary tablet computer but perhaps the most important information is that regarding the sales figures.

Apple have said that they sold over 300,000 iPad’s in the US (the only place it is available) on the first weekend of its release. It is, however, difficult to work out exactly whether this figure is good or bad. Some analysts claim that it is spot on and as they predicted where as others predicted double the amount of sales considering the huge hype that has surrounded the product and the massive supply of them from Apple.

Although it may be lower than some expected 300,000 is not a figure to be sniffed at, it is a fair amount more than the total first day sales of the original iPhone in 2007 which has now gone on to hit massive sales which are expected to reach $20 billion worldwide this year.

The term ‘worldwide’ is obviously a key factor in the sales totals too as they will of course rise significantly once it has been made available to the European and Asian markets.

The iPad is not expected to do this well but they are forecasting sales of 1.3million units of the device within the first quarter.

The download market had a good weekend too as an Apple spokesperson pointed out, iPad owners downloaded more than 1 million apps and over 250,000 e-books on Saturday alone.

So all in all a good opening weekend for the iPad and it will surely get better, Apple’s main challenge will come after all the die hard fans have purchased their iPad how do they convince the rest of us to buy one?

Apple shares to be boosted by iPad sales

With the launch of the iPad imminent it is no surprise that Apple shares have risen. This has been helped along by the prediction that Apple could sell up to 10 million units of the tablet computer before the end of the year.

If this was to cone to fruition, Apple’s shares would be pushed to new highs and many of the critics questioning just how popular the iPad would be would have their answer.

Analyst at Morgan Stanley, Kate Huberty stated that iPad suppliers are forecasting huge shipments of 8-10 million units of the tablet by the end of December, all of which are expected to sell. This is up from previous estimates of around 5 million units.

Huberty also noted that the suppliers believe 2.5 million iPads will actually be shipped in the first 3 months of sales alone which would inevitably lead to hugely significant earnings for Apple.

Shares in Apple have risen by an impressive $2.06 to $232.96 based on the news that Apple will be shipping such a large number of iPads. This figure represents a 100% increase on the amount per share this time last year validating the success of the iPad before it is even released.

All of the predictions and estimates will be proven or shown to be absolute rubbish come this weekend when the iPad officially goes on sale in the US. The exact release dates for the UK are still ambiguous as ever, we should expect to be getting them by the end of April providing that the demand in the US is not to overwhelming.

Apple Hoarding 10-inch ‘Tablet Screens’… Apparently

Okay, deep breath everyone, here comes another Apple rumour. Usual provisos apply, your own discretion is required – this thing is full of anonymous sources and a very healthy dose of conjecture and may very well be the work of an Apple PR engaging in the dark art of leaking, or just plain made up. I don’t know, but it seems plausible enough to be worth talking about nevertheless.

Electronics suppliers in Asia are reportedly telling anyone who wants a bulk order of 10” screens that they cannot have one as Apple have pre-ordered them all. What would Apple want with all those 10” screens? Well, the popular theory, predictably, is that these screens are for the long-awaited and heavily rumoured Apple tablet computer, the standard practice with a bulk build of this nature being to bulk order ahead of time, to guarantee supplies at current prices.

An anonymous (told you) source states, “We were designing a product for a customer and we needed 10-inch screens, but we’ve been trying for months and can’t get one from any of the Asian suppliers… We were told that Apple preordered them all. All 10 inch LCDs, and all 10 inch OLEDs too.”

So, it’s official then? Well, no. The strange thing about this rumour is that Apple is supposed to also be buying up OLED panels with the screens and Industry experts are predicting that 10” OLEDs would make the device prohibitively expensive, even by apple’s standards.
