Microsoft and Yahoo seem finally ready to link up and make a concerted effort to fight the dominance of market leader, Google. The resignation of Jerry Yang, Yahoo’s beleaguered CEO is thought to have been the catalyst for renewed interest from the software company.

It seems everyone wants to jump on the social networking bandwagon these days. First, Yahoo announces plans to group their whole raft of services into one large social network, now it seems that Microsoft wants to turn Windows Live into something like Facebook.

As Yahoo crumbles before our eyes, it would appear that closest competitor, Microsoft is going from strength to strength. The third largest search engine provider in the world seems to have struck a deal with old enemies, Sun Microsystems to, they hope, drastically increase their share of the search market.

The spike in share price that Yahoo experienced earlier in the week may prove to be short-lived, considering what Steve Ballmer, Microsoft’s Chief Executive said yesterday in Sydney, Australia. Balmer claimed that Microsoft was no longer interested in taking over Yahoo, which comes as some surprise considering the aggressive attempts the company has made to buy them in the past.

The troubled advertising deal between Google and Yahoo has been officially put out of its misery by the search engine giant. Since its inception, the deal had come up against strong criticism from advertisers, who feared prices would rise and the US Department of Justice, who feared that the deal would be anti-competitive.

Windows Vista has a bad reputation; it is probably undeserved - but only a bit. For all its innovation, Vista does have some fairly glaring faults. For this reason, it was refreshing to see Mike Nash, Microsoft’s Corporate Vice-President for Windows Product Management, claiming that Microsoft had learned from the Vista experience, at the company’s Professional Developers Conference.

In a period where Microsoft is spending a lot of its time aggressively trying to buy, undermine or sabotage Yahoo and Google, it seems strange that there is anybody at either company willing to take a call from the computer giant. Somebody must have though, because the top three search engine operators have just announced a joint set of principles for doing business with nations where free speech is restricted, like China or North Korea.

Windows 7 is due for its first alpha release to the public today. The release is scheduled to take place at the Microsoft PDC2008 conference where, amongst a huge amount of hype and fanfare we’ll get the best idea yet of the new operating system and what it is going to mean for an end user. What Microsoft are likely to downplay amongst the rigmarole however, is their reported plan to use Windows 7 against search engine giant, Google.

In an attempt to build its market share at the expense of market leader, Google, Ask.com is drastically changing its search engine. The new Ask is expected to deliver quicker results and greater relevance than previously. According to CEO, Jim Safka, the new search is 30 percent faster and, in early tests, has increased the rate that customers return to use the site by 16 percent.
