.edu pages are essential. If you went to college then you might just want to use the Alumni pages. For example, the pages on the Alumni site will allow you to link to your own website. The alumni site likes to know what their past students are up to in order to show potential students what they can gain by going to their school. So if you are a success and link that success, the alumni site gets something out of it as well as you. You get the link. You also get the added benefit of the .edu. An education site is considered a trusted site. A trusted site means you get a better importance ranking with Google and other search engines.

A blog can be an important tool if it is used right. You don’t want to have a no follow tag on the blog you decide to link to. In other words make sure that the link is okay by the host blogger. Then you can get the better ranking. What you do is leave a comment on the right page. This comment should in some way link to you. You will not get the highest page ranking from a blog, but you will get some. You will also get a better ranking if the comment is on a blog that makes sense to the search engine. In other words, it has to have meaning. You can also use competitor backlinks to your site by offering them a chance to comment on your information for the ranking.
