Windows Vista has a bad reputation; it is probably undeserved – but only a bit. For all its innovation, Vista does have some fairly glaring faults. For this reason, it was refreshing to see Mike Nash, Microsoft’s Corporate Vice-President for Windows Product Management, claiming that Microsoft had learned from the Vista experience, at the company’s Professional Developers Conference.
Early reports regarding the code released at the conference are that he isn’t just saying that. The general feeling is that, based on preliminary viewings, everything that worked on Vista will work on Windows 7. Microsoft have also insisted that it will run longer than vista on identical batteries be faster than Vista using the same hardware. Essentially, says Microsoft, whatever advances it provides will not come at the expense of performance.
People who have had access to the preview build, would appear to be backing up Microsoft’s PR. Reports indicate that 7 is polished, at least more so than vista, even in this preliminary form and manages to maintain good performance even under some stress.
Of course, a lot of the new features of Windows 7 are still too shaky to be included in the previews, so we don’t know anything like the full picture yet. Early indications however, are good. Fingers Crossed.
