Proof that Microsoft wants Windows 7 out this year is mounting steadily. Microsoft has confirmed on their blog that it is planning to give us a release candidate of their new operating system before the final version is ready. What this basically means is there will not be a second beta of the new OS before the final version. This goes a long way to backing up the standard thinking in the industry that Windows 7 will be with us somewhere in the third quarter of 2009, early 4th at the latest.
The apparent rush to get Windows 7 onto the shelves is a real indictment of Vista, a version of Windows which it is probably fair to say has failed overall, proving intolerably slow and ponderous on all but very high-end systems. The OS is so hated that many people have chosen to either not upgrade or to revert back to XP, this includes many business customers.
Microsoft’s eagerness to draw a line under the failing system is understandable, however, they would do well to be cautious about rushing the system to market before it is completely ready. Consumers are likely to forgive them one failed operating system, but two?
