  • Search engine algorithms – there are numerous search engines that continuously scan the internet, and their search parameters are constantly changing. It would be a good measure if one constantly monitors these algorithms so he will be guided as to how to manage his search engine optimisation.
  • Key words and key phrases – it is not enough to come up with key words and key phrases based on the topic you are expounding on your articles.  Search engine optimisation is all about knowing current search engine parameters in its searches. It is best to note that you formulate key words and key phrases by basing them not only on your topic but on how people would phrase them. Understanding of search engine algorithms would be the key to this.
  • Positioning of key words and phrases – having ascertained a search engine’s current search parameters, having the right key words and key phrases is not enough.  The positioning of these words and phrases as they are incorporated in your articles is about as important as having the appropriate ones.  Search engine optimisation is also placing the right keywords and phrases at the start of the article, e.g., placing sufficient key words and key phrases in the headline and the first paragraph. These are where search engine usually look for your keywords:  “above the fold.”

It would be a good measure though not to overdo the placements of these key words and key phrases so as to make your article understandable to the human readers. The search engines can also recognize this and this would greatly harm your ranking. This indiscriminate use of keywords and key phrases as a means of search engine optimization could even actually backfire as search engines would block websites that are perceive to be un-understandable due to misplaced and misused words.

  • Links – search engine optimisation is not entirely limited to sprinkling your articles with appropriate key words and key phrases.  The names of your links also play an important as search engines also check out your links.  It would be for good measure that you place key words and key phrases to your links. Some clever and intuitive HTML coding is definitely another search engine optimisation skill that would help you rank your pages highly.

It would also be a good measure if your website is linked to credible,    appropriate and high-ranking websites. This is called social media   optimisation.

  • Constant monitoring – it would help so much if you continue to monitor your website’s rankings as this could guide you as to what necessary adjustments or changes you need to do.

All of the above processes could be very time consuming and complicated for some.  A webmaster, which is more pre-occupied with his website’s processes, content design, etc., may not have the time and the expertise for search engine optimisation.  To continually attend to the long term process of search engine optimisation, it is highly advisable to hire professionals who can focus all their time and effort at attending to this vital process.
