Linkbaiting
The idea of posting attractive, interesting content that people want to link to on your site is as old as the internet. The concept of linkbaiting is simply a way to harness this golden rule and supercharge it. Best of all, Google has no problem with it.
So what is Linkbaiting?
Linkbaiting is a step beyond just having interesting, usefull stuff on your site, it refers to content that’s just so darn funny, ingenious or outrageous that people can’t help but share it with others. They do this by linking to you from their site or blog - essentially linkbaiting is just a very potent form of viral marketing.
Links, as we all know, are the quickest path to the top of the Google rankings and, in today’s SEO obsessed world, there simply isn’t a better or more effective ‘knock out punch’ than an outrageously good video, article, game etc. that people feel compelled to share. It really is the quickest way to gain a huge marketing advantage over your competition.
Linkbait doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated; in fact, many of the best examples aren’t at all. I’m talking about things like the Diet Coke/Mentos video, Blendtec’s iphone in the blender or the creative geniuses at 'Cracked' who manage to get almost everything they write onto the Digg homepage. The main thing that this kind of content needs is a compelling/hilarious/new concept. The rest is easy.
Linkbaiting has the potential to work better than any other marketing practice because it utilises the oldest and most effective form of advertising there is, word of mouth! However, once you’ve made your masterpiece, it’s important to remember that the links you get from a really good piece of content wont last forever. Maintaining the bump you’ll see from your linkbait requires you adding new content to the site at least a few times a month. For this reason, it’s best not to go all out on one expensive or elaborate promotion, but instead, to figure out a way of stretching to several different pieces of content. Always remember that the best practitioners of the art are consistent.
So, now you know what linkbait is, go out and make some! All it takes is a great idea. Who knows, if you do it right, the whole world could be talking about your website tomorrow.
