Yahoo has taken the first step towards its long discussed social network revamp, unveiling a major redesign of its popular – some would even say industry leading – MyYahoo start page. The revamp moves it alongside some of its more feature-heavy rivals and involves use of new online technologies and content from some big-name partners. It’s also the first step on the road to a more open platform – the start page will now encourage third party applications from independent developers.
The design of my.yahoo.com has been updated from today and now includes features like Flickr and Yahoo Buzz as well as content from highly rated providers such as the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal.
This reinvigoration marks the start of Yahoo’s all out assault on the world of social networking. The company hopes to wrest control of the industry from the likes of Facebook and Myspace, which seems like a lofty ambition until you consider that Yahoo already have almost fifty million users across a huge range of applications. If they can successfully link them together whilst including a social networking element, they could be in position to become a one-stop-shop for general web use and networking.
I certainly wouldn’t bet against them.
