There are a lot of reasons why somebody might buy an iPhone or iPod Touch: Web access, usability, the sheer prettiness of the thing, to name but a few. However, very few would put gaming on that list and, it would seem, that we’ve all been overly judgemental on that score, as rave reviews roll in for the games available through the iTunes store.
Games like Real Soccer 2009 on the iPhone are said to rival their Nintendo DS counterparts in terms of playability and graphics, and the upcoming iPhone version of Sim City is supposed to be bigger and better than any previous version, to name just two examples.
It was thought that the lack of buttons would prove an obstacle to playing serious games on these devices, though early feedback would seem to show that this is much less of an obstacle than people assumed, if it is at all.
Apple may well become a thorn in the side of Sony and Nintendo, currently the big players in the mobile gaming market. In fact, in one respect they have already surpassed them – sheer weight of numbers. There are around 1,500 games titles available to buy from the iTunes App Store which compares very favourably with the paltry 600 for the Nintendo DS and 300 for the Playstation Portable.
