Can I use SearchWiki to my advantage?
Numerous people have asked us about this now that word is getting out about SearchWiki and it’s a fair question. It’s right to think there’s probably some bigger scheme in play here – I’d bet my house that Google are looking carefully at SearchWiki and thinking hard about how they can incorporate the information they get from it into the search algorithm.
So, how can you use SearchWiki to improve the ranking of your site when/if Google starts using the information from their new feature?
Well, sorry but I’m not sure you can really, not easily anyway. It’s probably true that if Google notices a lot of people deleting a listing, it’ll consider moving it down the rankings and vice-versa if it notices large numbers promoting a site. However, you probably can’t just go out and tell your friends to start deleting your competitors and moving you to the top. Bear in mind that SearchWiki only works when you’re logged in and therefore it’s very easy to track people who appear to be attempting to manipulate the system. I’m afraid, in terms of SEO, this tactic looks like a non-starter.
My advice is to simply create content that people want to bookmark, the sort of stuff that would do well on Digg and the rest of those sites. That’s the only real way to turn SearchWiki to your advantage.
