Video hosting site Youtube has shown its support for the less fortunate this week by announcing a service that will automatically caption any video uploaded to the website in the English language.

The announcement will be met with much appreciation by the 9 million deaf and hearing impaired people in the UK as it will give them full access to the seemingly never-ending pool of videos on Youtube.

The service is not quite perfect yet however, as Youtube owners Google have stated that there are still a few things that need to be ironed out before it works as well as they want it to and as well as any service run by them is expected.

It does seem quite an insurmountable task to have every English language video captioned considering how many there are, but the ever innovative guys at Google have a clever way of speeding up the process. They will be basing the service on the technology that they had previously developed that powers the ‘Google Voice Search’ service. Inevitably the captions can only be accurate as long as the audio quality on the video is clear, which in many cases it isn’t, but the company have promised that this is an issue that they will work daily to try and improve.

They are also going to allow the owners of the video content to download a copy of the its transcript and make any changes or improvements as they see fit as well as the creation of a button that will enable users to request the auto-captioning service on videos that do not already have it, this will then be done as soon as humanly possible.

This is a very good move by Google (Youtube) both ethically and selfishly as it will allow people that could not previously have enjoyed the service a chance to do so whilst increasing their number of visitors by a possible 9million.

I am sure many of you, like me, have habitually typed in the web address of one of your most frequently visited sites only to realise that your usual flawless typing has failed you and in your haste you have misspelled the URL (Googgle instead of Google). You then realise that instead of getting the usual ‘unrecognized URL’ error you are actually whisked off to a rather basic but evidently intentional website.

Internet search engine giants Google have been touted as the main beneficiaries of these web addresses that set out to mimic typographical errors in existing websites with a potential earnings projection of $497 million studies have shown.

Tyler Moore and Benjamin Edelman of Harvard University conducted the study on the aptly named practise “typosquatting”. They have predicted that Google could make such a substantial amount of money down to its network of display ads that run on many of these mimic websites, Google of course get a cut of any profit made from such ads.

Let me give you an example, take Google, how often do you think it is misspelled “Googgle”? If someone was to buy this as a domain name they would more then likely get a fairly high percentage of visitors intending to go to the Google homepage. Many of these sites use Google ads as a way to make revenue, anytime one of these ads are used Google get paid, a pretty easy half a billion dollars then.

A small study by ZDNet found the following: “Expanding to the top 100,000 sites, retaining the 0.7% estimated ratio of typosquatting site, we estimate that typo domains collectively receive at least 68.2 million daily visitors. If these typo domains were treated as a single website, that site would be ranked by Alexa as the 10th most popular website in the world. It would be more popular, in unique daily visitors, than twitter.com, myspace.com, or amazon.com!”

Edelman and Moore estimate that 60% of these “typosquatting” websites use Google ads, without boring you with the maths they have estimated that this amounts to roughly $497 million.

As co-council for a law firm currently suing Google after their ads appeared on a misspelled domain of the firms website Edelman may have been somewhat bias in his findings although he promises otherwise.

Google do state, however that they will remove any ads from misspelled domains upon request of the original sites owner.

Google appears to be finally flexing its muscles in China. The search engine giant announced, through a prepared statement this week, that it plans to stop censoring the Chinese version of its search engine and may pull out of China altogether. As well as criticising the Government’s stance on censorship, the statement also mentioned that the company had uncovered cyber attacks on itself and other foreign companies emanating from China on a huge scale.

The reaction within China has been profound. Many of the search engine’s estimated 40 million users even going so far as to leave flowers as tributes at the gates of Google’s Chinese headquarters. One Chinese student even calling the prospect of a Google pull-out ‘a tragedy’. It’s not hard to see why the reaction has been so great, Google’s market share has been growing steadily in China over the last few years, doubling their market share to 35.6%. Whilst that still leaves them a distant second behind home grown outfit, Baidu (58.4%) it’s still incredibly significant in a country as isolated from the west as China.

The Chinese government’s response couldn’t be more different from that of the nation’s people. The government have so far not only refused to make any meaningful statement, they have, in fact, taken steps to down play and even hide the news from the Chinese people. The state-run Chinese news agency, Xinhua initially offered only limited coverage of the story and seemed to be actively soft-pedalling what would ordinarily be a lead story.

Google’s perceived unwillingness to stand up to the Chinese government on the subject of censorship has been a bone of some contention amongst opponents of the Chinese government and freedom of speech advocates, therefore this week’s developments have been met with a broadly positive response from the left of the political spectrum. US Secretary of State, Hilary Clinton even went on record to praise the company, or rather criticise the Chinese regime – “[Google’s allegations] raise very serious concerns and questions… The ability to operate with confidence in cyber space is critical.”

It’s hard to overstate the significance of this move from Google, if they were to pull out of China it would leave Chinese internet in the grips of a practical monopoly and potentially scupper hundreds of business ventures and partnerships either with or relying on Google. More importantly probably, it would leave the Chinese people even more isolated from the rest of the world than they currently are, with even less access to the facts than they currently have.

The Wall Street journal has a quote from a concerned Chinese citizen named Ms Xu that sums the situation up perfectly.
“Our postings on the Internet are deleted by [other] Web sites, or when we upload pictures showing bad things on the street, they are deleted … I don’t know what to do without Google,”

It’s likely that the threat to withdraw from China is just Google’s attempt to press the Chinese government into allowing them some measure of free speech through the search results they provide. For the Chinese people’s sake, let’s hope that’s the case.

For a while now, Google has made no secret of the fact that it believes that mobile is going to be a key growth area for the internet and internet advertising in particular. So confident were they of this that in 2008, with some assistance from the OHA, they built the first mobile only operating system and then, last year, took the bold step of actually releasing their own handset, the HTC.

Whilst HTC phones have met with a generally favourable reception critically, consumers still seem, for the most part, to prefer the Blackberry and the iPhone. All that could be about to change however (or at least that’s what Sergei Brin would tell you), thanks to the Google Nexus One, the latest handset to be produced by the search engine giant.

Nexus One will be the first phone to run, the latest version of Google’s operating system, Android 2.1, which boasts a raft of cool features like interactive wallpaper and improved customisation, even if it lacks some of the iPhone OS’s flashier features. The specifications also look excellent, the headlines being a 1 GHz snapdragon processor (the most powerful processor to ever feature in a phone), a 5 megapixel camera and a pretty impressive screen, that compares very favourably indeed with the screen on the Motorola Droid that wowed the industry when it was released at the back end of last year.

The phone is available unlocked and can be purchased for around £325 pounds off contract, £40 less than an iPhone. The first UK network to get it will be Vodafone though as of yet there is no announcement as to how much it will cost to get one on contract. However, if you want a guess (buckle up, conjecture fans) I would have to anticipate that it will be cheaper than the iPhone is on other networks.

Why? Well, the nearest contemporary of the Nexus in terms of individual price is the Nokia E72, for which Vodafone charge £30 a month (600 minutes, unlimited texts, 500 MB of mobile internet and webmail). It would certainly be hard to justify charging more. This price compares very favourably with the iPhone’s, a comparable deal for which will cost £35 from O2.

So, arguably better specs, comparable functionality for less money, logically this should be a decent rival for the iPhone. Only time will tell of course, though Apple would do well not to dismiss the challenge from Google, especially as the Nexus is unlikely to simply rest with Vodafone, like the iPhone has done withO2. The Nexus is expected to roll out across all, or at least many, networks in the near future, meaning that it could well become ubiquitous pretty quickly.

For a long time the system has allowed you to filter out ads that you do not want appearing on your site, however, the number you could designate was strictly limited. Also, the filtering process used to take hours upon hours to work allowing inappropriate, or competitors ads to take up space on your site.

Now however, the process only takes thirty minutes and you can designate as many as 500 URLs to ban from your site. This update has been coming for a while and is hugely necessary since, particularly because of the way the content network works, site owners often find themselves displaying ads from competitors. Obviously, you don’t want to do that for a moment longer than is necessary.

For a while now I’ve been talking about the dangers of assuming that one search marketing approach will work across a number of platforms, with mixed results. Unfortunately, some people just don’t want to believe that the approach required to make a success of a PPC campaign on Google is that much different to the approach required to do well on Yahoo, Bing, etc. Some people unfortunately will not be swayed from the notion that search is search and what’s good for the good is good for the gander.

If you’re in this camp then allow me to have one last crack at persuading you otherwise with one good reason why you need to think of each as a new campaign and tailor your approach to match… Demographics.

The splits in terms of search engine use in the UK are pretty well known. Google have around 85 – 90% of the market, Yahoo come in around 5% and Bing fluctuate erratically below that. However, the mistake comes in believing that the pie is split along the same lines in terms of demographics. It isn’t.

A couple of examples of what I’m talking about…

Youth – For some reason, the average age of yahoo’s users has historically tended to be a bit younger than Gopogle’s. So if, for example, you sell products and have a certain selection that you think is going to appeal to younger consumers then it might be an idea to push those products more enthusiastically on Yahoo. By the same token, you may find that the results you get from saga holidays isn’t quite as good.

Experience – Many Internet Explorer users have Bing as their default search engine to begin with. Whereas experienced internet users will more often than not change the default settings to Yahoo, or (more likely) to Google the less experienced won’t. Ergo the users of Bing may contain be the less experienced users – perhaps not the venue for your ‘integrated IT business solution.’

Debate surrounding this one has been raging over at the Top Click Media offices for quite some time now. Some of us think it’s one of the most exciting developments to the ranking algorithm for quite some time, whilst others of us question the relevance of seeing things posted to the internet in order of how recently they were posted rather than relevance.

I personally fall into the former category, though I’ll try and sum up both sides’ points fairly…

Pros

Okay, we’ll start with the useful stuff. When you’re looking for stuff that’s just happened, information being recent is by far the most important thing.

Let’s use Michael Jackson as an example. In the hours after the story of the singers death was broken on TMZ Google was flooded with queries pertaining to the singer. For these searchers, almost all of whom were trying verify then rumour, aside from any news results, the first page would have been pretty much useless as it would only be bringing up official sites, places to buy tickets for the O2 shows, etc. even the news results would have been out of date. A real time news ticker would have serviced those searchers needs exactly.

I know that’s an extreme example, but the principle stands up for all current affairs searches, and even for other types of searches. Basically it comes down to the fact that real-time search provides another perspective that could well be useful. Maybe even providing you with something you didn’t think of originally.

Cons

Right, now the case for the prosecution. Basically the point made by the naysayers is this, being the first or latest to comment on something does not make you right, nor does it make your opinion any more valid. In fact, often it’s quite the opposite, to grant these people what’s often effectively position one on Google, however briefly seem s a little bit counter-intuitive.

Also, it may be open to abuse. I’ve no doubt there’s unscrupulous black-hat types out there as I type figuring out ways to automate their twitter posts etc., to keep showing up. Google will undoubtedly have thought about this, though it’ll still be interesting to see how spammy it ends up getting.

The other criticism is that it increases Google’s dominion over the first page of results. This is a common gripe from SEO consultants, that it makes it tougher for them to get decent rankings if more and more spaces are taken up by Google Base, Google Images, Real Time Search, etc. This is valid in some respects though if the information Google provides is relevant then I really don’t see the harm. After all, the SERPS are always there if you don’t find what you need from Google’s offerings.

If you’ve been following this blog over the last few weeks you’ll know that Google have been looking into including a twitter style real time element in their search engine results for quite some time now. I personally thought it would be included as part of the caffeine update and said so on the blog a couple of weeks ago. Just shows what I know, this week the search engine giant began to release the real time element across the world.

It’s no beta launch either, according to Google the update is completely live and should be visible around the world in a couple of days.

You’ll see for yourself soon enough, but for now let me fill you in on how the new function works. The real time section works in the same way as the other search add-ons like product search or Google Base in that it takes up a section in the SERPs about two results wide, this then populates with results pertaining to the search query you’ve entered as they are put onto the internet.

It is undoubtedly very cool, especially when you consider that the tool is indexing over a billion separate sites (that’s right a billion) and bringing you the results second by second which can’t have been easy to build. Okay, Twitter did it first, but impressive as that was, they were only indexing the results from one site, theirs, what Google have achieved here is a much more complicated proposition.

Here’s what senior Googler, Amit Singal had to say had to say…

“There is so much information being generated out there that getting you relevant information is the key to the success of a product like this. It’s all about relevance, relevance, relevance.”

Well quite. So, what sort of stuff comes up? Well, there’s a lot of news sites and obviously Twitter, facebook et al. get a look in which is pretty useful, especially when you’re researching or looking for the latest results about something as you see actual information rather than just whichever webmaster has paid the most for their SEO management, which isn’t always the most relevant info. Also, and this is the clincher, it helps you get an at-a-glance look at the way public opinion, taking the temperature of the world on an issue instantly.

Stay tuned for more info and discussion on this – it’s caused quite a stir in the office.

According to Matt Cutts, Google’s de facto mouthpiece to the SEO community, Google’s latest search update, caffeine, will launch early next year. What do I mean when I say launch? Don’t worry, the rankings aren’t going to turn upside down overnight. As is Google’s recent form, the roll out will be gradual and in stages over approximately the first quarter of next year.

According to Matt, Google ‘knows how anxious webmasters get this time of year’ which is why the Caffeine update is being released to one data centre so that they can collect data and fix bugs, before being released gradually to other data centres. Predictably, Mr Cutts declined to comment on which data centre was going to be the first to have the pleasure.

In preparation for the next step in the release process Google has shut down the Caffeine Sandbox, replacing it with the below message…

“Based on the success we’ve seen, we believe Caffeine is ready for a larger audience. Soon we will activate Caffeine more widely, beginning with one data center. This sandbox is no longer necessary and has been retired, but we appreciate the testing and positive input that webmasters and publishers have given.”

Well, there you go kids, it seems we’re moving into endgame, caffeine is entering its final phase. Next stop, the SERPs.

A very interesting adwords development that’s been trialled across the US recently has finally made it to these shores. Essentially what’s happening is that Google are allowing some accounts, initially just ones with particularly high quality scores, to show more than just text in their ads, this can take some surprisingly diverse forms with everything from links and maps, to pictures of products and even videos.

The idea is to cater to each individual searcher, providing them with not only exactly the information they require, but in the right form, i.e., price comparisons if you’re searching for ecommerce items, maps if you’re searching for local businesses. The Google blog explains it like so…

“Text is often useful, but sometimes videos and pictures are a more effective way to receive information. For example, if you want to learn a magic trick, a video showing you how to perform the trick is likely the best result”

The newly available types of ad are listed below.

Multiple Links

One of the simplest and most effective forms is the multiple linking option. This allows you to specify a number of specific hyperlinks which take people to various parts of your site. For instance if someone was searching for golf clubs you could offer separate links for drivers, putters, wedges and irons.

Video

This is an interesting one. If you’re looking for instructions on how to do something, a video is quite often the most useful thing to see. This ad allows advertisers to show individual videos below their text ads. Like many of the other new kinds of ad this takes up quite a lot of space in the SERPS, but I’ll come onto that later.

Maps

This allows you to show your business location, address, phone number etc., on a map within the ad. This already goes on to an extent with Local Search, though here it’s actually in the ad so you can appear above your competitors easily – if you’re willing to pay, that is. Obviously, it’s particularly good for people doing regional searches. There’s even a version for bigger brands and chain stores that allows you to display all the branches in the area you’re searching for.

Product Images

A very recent edition to the stable is product image ads, this allows you to show thumbnail images of the products people are searching for within your ads. Again, this is similar to Product Search, except that, since it’s an ad, you can leap frog your competitors. Also, it’s better for Google as they can monetise it.

Price Comparisons

This is by far the most audacious thing Google are planning. From the early looks I’ve had it seems to be basically a price comparison website, but in the sponsored results. Google will take your price information and rank you and your competitors accordingly, you’ll then pay when people request a quote. I’ll give you more information when I have it as this is potentially huge.

Well, there you go. This should make adwords management a little more interesting. It obviously has some major advantages for advertisers but also some big ones for Google. From my point of view Google get two main things out of this.

One: The sponsored list becomes more relevant, which means they stand a chance of lowering the 70% of people who apparently bypass the sponsored listings entirely, making them more money.

Two: It lowers the overall importance of the natural rankings, making SEO less relevant (Google aren’t generally fans of people manipulating their results). Call me cynical but…

There’s been a small change to the adwords interface over the last few days that seems to have caught a couple of people on the hop. What’s happened is Google has decided to stop allowing exceptions to its 35 character display URL rule. It used to be that you would be allowed to file an exception request if your URL was longer than this but now that function has been removed.

So what do you do if your URL is longer than 35 characters? Well, the first thing to do is take out the ‘www.’ at the start, this isn’t necessary. Unfortunately, if your URL is still too long then it looks like you may be in some trouble as it seems Google are unwilling to compromise on their principle that the display URL must be closely related to the root of the destination URL. I would still give it a go though, you might get lucky.

This leaves you with one option, get a new domain and create a mirrored site there. Not the most desirable of options, I know, but probably better than just giving up on adwords entirely.

SEOs spend most of their working lives – and, let’s be honest, some of their private lives – trying to think like the Google Bot, in order to make their clients sites as welcoming and comfortable for it to visit and return to as possible. For the most part this is a pretty difficult thing to do, the Google Bot is, after all, a computer programme – not a living thing and, as such, is pretty hard to empathise with.

Until now, that is…

That’s right, the Google Labs section in webmaster tools has just played another blinder by introducing a tool that at last lets you see what the Bot actually sees when it crawls the internet, viewing and judging sites. This allows you to get an idea of how your optimisation is going without having to wait until your site is crawled again. Pretty useful, I think you’ll agree.

The experimental app is called ‘Fetch as Googlebot,’ and it works like so…

When you put your site through ‘Fetch’, it gives you a real-time representation of what the bot actually sees when crawling a site. It returns HTML code exactly as a Googlebot would encounter it.

The plan is to use this as a tool to allow webmasters to view their own sites after they have made major changes and it’s an invaluable resource as it allows you to get an invaluable insight into potential trouble spots, diagnose why you aren’t being indexed in the way you’d like to be etc. In fact, the list of things you could use this for is probably way too long to go into here, though I will let you in on what the Google blog itself has to say about the new tool…

“This feature will help users a great deal when they re-implement their site with a new technology stack, find out that some of their pages have been hacked, or want to understand why they’re not ranking for specific keywords.”

Well, there you have it that’s the latest Google Labs innovation for you, and it gets an a-star from me, literally the only limitation is that it only returns 100kb of data. Don’t worry, we think this is just how the app works, we have no reason to believe that the actual bot only views this much data. However, that said it is a good idea to keep the 100kb mark in mind when designing pages, purely because smaller pages load faster, and load times are always a factor in ranking.

Google Labs has struck again with yet another useful tool entering beta testing on Webmaster Tools. It’s called Malware Details and it’s basically a godsend for anyone worried about hacking/illicitly installed Malware on their site. It works by crawling the site and flagging anything that it feels is malicious.

The really useful thing about this code is that it comes straight from Google, who basically decide what is or isn’t malicious code anyway, so it’s great peace of mind for a site to know that they won’t be penalised, as Google itself has given their site a clean bill of health… Or not.

This is a very timely release from Google – webmasters across the world are getting increasingly worried about the prospect of malware being installed on their sites. This is mainly due to a renewed focus from the major search engines on penalising sites that are suspected of having malware installed. It doesn’t matter who put it there, if you have any malware at all installed it is likely that any major search engine/browser will be informing users of this fact.

Whether it’s with a small note on your site’s search results, or a big red screen like Google Chrome helpfully provides it’s not something you want site users to be seeing.

Google are at pains to point out that Malware Details is not a cure in itself, rather a first step in ridding your site of malware. The programme works by giving you snippets of code it considers malicious, it is then up to you to find and remove the code.

If you suspect there maybe malware on your site – or even if you don’t – we highly recommend that you take advantage of this new tool. The main reason being that if Google are putting money into helping people identify and fix malware issues, they are probably also gearing up for a renewed push to punish those who have malware on their sites. The old Google carrot and stick approach.
