A carefully orchestrated slanging match between celebrities is a time-honoured way of building publicity for a new venture. However, it would appear that a new front has opened up in the world of celebrity feuds. Whereas before, celebrities would have to go to the trouble of ordering their agent to schedule a ‘tell all’ interview to air their supposed grievances, the advent of micro-blogging site, Twitter, has allowed celebrities to engage in these profile building exchanges with no more than a click of their personal assistant’s mouse.
Of course, it didn’t take long for the undisputed King and Queen of celebrity defamation, singer, Lily Allen and celebrity blogger, Perez Hilton, to get in on the act with a blazing twitter-based row erupting between the pair over the last few days. Purely coincidentally, lily Allen’s new album is currently available in all good record shops.
I won’t go into the details of the rant, partly because I don’t want to bore you, but mainly because I don’t think the * button on my keyboard can handle blanking out all the swearing. Suffice to say, it was vicious and both sides gave as good as they got.
