CNN and Microsoft to Photosynth Obama
CNN and Microsoft have decided to team up to try to make the inauguration of Barack Obama, taking place today, the most recorded moment in human history. Everyone witnessing the inauguration live will be invited to take a picture. Those pictures will then be melded together by Microsoft, using Photosynth technology. The idea is to make a commemorative 3D portrait of the event that can be rotated and viewed for numerous different angles.
If nothing else, this will be a great test of just what Photosynth is capable of. As anyone who has used it knows, Photosynth images get better and more impressive depending on the number of individual images used to create them. This will be the biggest one ever attempted, so the results could be pretty special.
Inauguration viewers with zoom lenses (that’s expected to be most ot them) will be invited to submit three photos of Barack Obama raising his hand to recite the oath of office, one wide angle, one at mid zoom and one close up. If a decent proportion of the audience does this it’s expected to provide huge numbers of photos.
So, is this an inspired piece of corporate art or cynical attempt to piggyback on the unprecedented popularity of incoming president, Barack Obama? I’ll let you decide.
