A while ago on this blog we talked about a Google app called ‘display ad builder,’ an application that helps sites build their own eye catching ads without employing a designer. It’s a great tool, though it’s important to use it properly, since obviously an ugly, irrelevant or badly executed ad can be counter productive. For this reason we’ve decided to offer some advice on creating the most successful display ad possible.
1. Firstly, you need to consider customisation. This is one of the key watchwords when building a good ad, it has to stand out and above all be relevant and appropriate to the product. Consider your brand, what are its key characteristics? It may sound corny but try to think of your product as a person, what is its personality? Serious? Wacky? Mysterious? Chose the fonts and colours that would suit that person and remember you are matching the brand, not your own personal taste.
2. Make sure that the words and pictures fit properly within your chosen template. This may sound obvious but it’s amazing how many people forget about it. Look carefully at the required specifications for copy, images, graphics, etc., and adhere to them strictly.
