Exciting changes to Google Search: News Timeline
Another exciting addition to Google’s search functionality is a neat little function called ‘Timeline.’ Timeline organises information already available on Google News and displays it in an organised fashion, along a physical timeline. It’s the latest offering from Andy Hertzfeld, one of Google’s superstar developers and former member of the original Apple development team.
Timeline shows you the history of the articles for any given search arranged in chronological order along a timeline. Essentially, before you click on the latest news article, the timeline allows you to get an overview of the history of the story up till this point.
It’s fully interactive and displays videos and photographs as well as traditional articles. Users can also limit the search to certain publications, blogs or news sources, which is very useful for getting an overview of the relative angles being taken on the big stories.
Timeline has the potential to be one of the most useful content related things Google has done in years, and not just for journalism nerds like me. Understanding the news is so much about context but it can often be hard to remember what came before when you’re lost in the latest twist or turn of a story, timeline makes this much easier.
