Social networking and music go together like peas and carrots, that’s been proved time and time again by MySpace and its relationship with, you know, practically every band in the world. So much so that a MySpace page is now a prerequisite for any aspiring musician – it’s no longer ‘Send us your demo,’ it’s ‘What’s your MySpace?’
Facebook on the other hand comes at social networking from a different angle, having originated as an exclusive, some might say elitist, message board for college kids. For this reason it has been slower to tap into the music market. It does offer the opportunity to ‘become a fan’ of an artist and share the music you like though really these applications are little more than window dressing.
For a while now however, there have been persistent rumours of Facebook taking music more seriously, these have re surfaced recently with more credibility than before – the New York Post, no less.
This musical development will probably take the form of some kind of Facebook music store or possibly applications from retail outlets selling music, though little else is known at this point. Sorry to be vague but information is scarce just now. Stay tuned, when we know more, so will you.
