Facebook wants even more Apps

Social networking leader, Facebook, is preparing to unveil a raft of brand new applications in an effort to get its users sharing and creating more content than ever before. The California based company has just released a new range of APIs (application programming interfaces) which will allow developers to access more of the various methods of sharing content through Facebook, including links, video, status and notes.

The networking site, which turned five last week, claims that recently it has seen increasing engagement with the site amongst its users, 15 million of whom, Facebook claim, update their status every day. The new APIs, it is hoped, will build on this increasing engagement with (some would say dependence on) the platform, allow it to become a much more involving experience for its users by allowing them more ways in which to express themselves through the site.

The new APIs are just part of the site’s general movement towards greater openness. Last week, Facebook joined the board of the OpenID Foundation that hopes to create a universal log in standard. This came as a surprise to some as the foundation would appear to conflict with Facebook’s own push for openness, the embryonic, ‘Facebook Connect.’

It seems when it comes to openness, Facebook just can’t get enough.
