When it comes to a strategic plan for actually getting yourself on the list, the best thing to do is to start at the beginning, simply search DMoz for your site, remembering to leave off the http://www (DMoz won’t recognise the search otherwise). You do this because often good sites get picked up organically by the editors – if your site’s really that good it could already be there. It’s also worth noting that the search list is not real-time, it’s updated about once a week so it’s worth checking back.
If you’re not on there the next step is to find the ideal category to submit to. The best categories are, of course, the more general ones higher up the list though remember, this directory has been around forever – the big categories are pretty stuffed. Your site will need to be quite something to make it into one of those. By all means search DMoz for your most relevant keyword, but above all things be realistic, are you really likely to get in.
Remember the rule from yesterday, less competitive category = better chance of timely acceptance. Also, bear in mind that it’s usually easier to get listed in local categories than it is in commercial ones. These are flawed rules but they’re the only ones you’ve got, so use them.
