Getting into DMoz #3: Choosing your Category

March 27, 2009 by Matt Thomas

When choosing a category it’s also a good idea to start small. Remember, you can always resubmit to a better category in the future. To begin with, select the three best, most realistic categories for you and submit to those.

If you have a concrete location (this should really be listed on your website, people) then you should definitely go for the category of your location. Once you’ve done that, you should consider defining your topic and suggesting your URL to that group but only if your site has more than local appeal, i.e., not if you’re an independent barber, butcher, locksmith, etc.
You should then be able to modify the topic by the particular details of your business. For example, a site for a copywriter could become freelance copywriter to differentiate a sole trader from the bigger companies and/or freelance UK copywriter to further differentiate you from the herd of writers in India, Australia, the US.

Essentially you should look to make the category as specific as possible. Remember the rule – less competitive category = better chance of timely acceptance.

    No you can not.
You are asked to suggest your site to the ONE BEST category.
If you selected the best category there can not be a better one.

  2. We have submitted our site – a comprehensive guide for students at least 3 times with no luck over a period of 6 months. We ensured all fields of the submission were within all suggested guide lines and never had any luck. We then chose a local category to submit to which, after two attempts, was finally approved. In the first instance we chose the MOST relevant directory but were ignored. Perhaps it is due to the fact the DMOZ is edited by humans that we can not rely on them. It is in our opinion that the editor of the second category was “on the ball”. So, can you submit to a better category in the future? Possibly not better, but you can resubmit to an other category and you just may find an editor who does his job properly.
