Getting into DMoz #4: Titles & Descriptions

March 28, 2009 by Matt Thomas

Okay, this bit is important, this is where people do or don’t get added to DMoz. The main thing to remember is, do not over complicate things when it comes to the title and description, there is no need to get fancy with these.

Firstly, the title, this should be your website’s name. Let’s stick with the copywriting example, if your website title is Richardson Copy, that should be the title of the submission, you could possibly change it to Richardson Copywriting but I really wouldn’t go further than that. You should be at pains not to look like a spammer, if the editor has even the slightest inkling that this is what you’re up to they will deny your application without hesitation. Remember, they’re not going to agonise over whether or not to crush your DMoz dreams – they have a lot of submissions to get through.

The description is another place where people come unstuck. Again, do not make this look spammy, though you do have a little more room for manoeuvre here. Remember, this is a human reviewed system, one editor’s idea of a good site is not necessarily another’s. You should study the other descriptions in the category to get an idea of what that editor is looking for.

To an extent you can ignore the usual rules of copywriting. Remember, this is not sales copy, you are not selling anything. Dull copy is fine – it just needs to get the point across.

  1. This is all not true.
Suggested website will not be rejected for bad titles or descriptions. DMOZ editors are used to rewrite them all the time as 99.99% of suggested titels and descriptions are not according to their guidelines.
Writing a good title and description might speed up the review process as you suggestion will stand out between all the other websites that did not bother to write something good.

I think i will give this a go tonite. Oh and if that comment was by a DMOZ editor, pass on the message that i think the system stinks!!!!
