Google first to sign deal with Twitter
Twitter announced on Monday that they will be integrating with Friend Connect, the new social networking service from Google. The move means that Twitter users can transfer their Twitter ID to Friend Connect and any other service integrated with it and, vice-versa, Google account holders can use their ID on Twitter.
Integration has long been the social networking buzzword of choice with all the major players launching sprawling partnerships with the smaller sites, in an attempt to create a large umbrella network.
I’ve been covering the race between the big social networking sites to form partnerships with the smaller ones for some time now, though I have to say that this move has surprised me a little. Twitter are one of, if not the, biggest of the second tier social networking sites that the big boys were expected to scrap over. It had been predicted that Facebook, or maybe MySpace, would be the ones to pin them down to an agreement.
It’s not known whether the Google deal is an exclusive arrangement. However, it is a significant clue that Twitter opted to announce the Google deal first. Only the coming weeks will tell if Google is to be the site’s only partner, though it’s highly possible.
