Google gets into VoIP
It appears Google have decided to wade into yet another industry. This week the company announced the launching of Google voice, a VoIP service to rival the ones already provided by industry leaders Truphone and Skype.
Like with any other VoIP service users will be able to make free local and international calls over the Internet, though Google will be adding considerable value to the whole experience by integrating it with some of the other services in the Google stable. One particularly interesting development is that the Google VoIP service will automatically transcribe your voice-mails and email it to your Gmail account.
In time this technology could bring a welcome end to the dreaded phone conversation sentence, ‘Could you just summarise everything you’ve just said in an email.’ I know a few office workers who would be pretty pleased to see the back of that one.
The service is, of course, only available in the US at the moment, to subscribers to the phone company ‘Grand Central,’ though it is expected to be rolled out across the world sooner rather than later.
