The voice recognition software that Google launched recently as part of Google Mobile App, the iPhone application that allows you to speak search queries into the handset, is proving to be a popular addition to the ever growing stable of iPhone features.
Voice recognition software has been around for years and years without really taking off. Indeed, both Microsoft and Yahoo have similar applications that allow people to surf via smartphones with spoken queries rather than typed words. However, Google, true to form, claims that its system is far superior and, also true to form, they have a point. It can analyse massive amounts of data and return largely accurate results that take the searcher’s position into account. So, if you were in Portsmouth and searched for taxi firms it would display the local Portsmouth services.
The service had a slow start after bugs and unreliability issues were exposed by initial users. However, Google quickly patched the application, this would appear to have resolved the problems.
It would seem that once again a Google project that was greeted with scepticism when it was first launched has proved the naysayers wrong by becoming a practical, widely used tool.
