From the launch of iGoogle in 2005 to the more recent launch of stars in search in March of this year, Google have been steadily making the search experience more relevant, more useful and more personal.
This week they have we’re introduced a new feature that brings a whole new level of personalisation to the Google homepage by letting users add a favourite photo or image as the background of their Google homepage, sort of like a desktop wallpaper but for Google. Users can choose a photo from their computer, or from their own Picasa Web Album or a public gallery that is hosted by Picasa which includes a whole range of quality images.
After already allowing users to choose exactly what they want to come up on their iGoogle homepage from weather to news, Google are really trying to make the experience even more personal with this update
For those users you who may want to enjoy the clean, simple look of Google as well as their personalised view, Google have made it simple to switch between your customised search page and the classic Google homepage.
Google are beginning to roll out this new feature to users in the U.S. over the next week. For those of us outside of the U.S Google have said that we can expect to see this new feature sometime next week as they will be rolling it out internationally as quickly as possible to offer similar, consistent experiences globally.

I dont know why its taken so long for google to offer a really customizable home page. It seems like such an easy offering to allow people to deeply customize their home page. Even I am getting a little sick of the plain google landing page and Id welsome the oportunity to create my own special google home page. This idea isnt revolutionary. Even AOL did it back in the day. The question is, will people want to use this new functionality.
