Perhaps sparked by the intensity of competition in the Smartphone market, where a new product seems to be launched every week, Apple have opened up a new frontier that will allow them to reach many more people than before; Walmart. The giant US retailer is set to begin selling the iPhone in time for Christmas. Walmart employees contacted, confirmed that they were being trained to sell the phone by Apple representatives.
Walmart are the second major US chain to pick up the iPhone, following ‘Best Buy,’ who began offering the device to its customers earlier in the year. This is a huge change from the summer, when the phone was only available from Apple directly or from selected phone shops.
There are even unconfirmed reports that Apple are re releasing the 4GB iPhone that was taken off the market after the 16GB model’s release, especially for Walmart. Reports indicate that this model could be on sale for as little as $99 dollars on a two year contract, a 75% cut from its original price of $399.
Apple are keenly aware that, with all the competitors they are up against, it’s going to take an aggressive marketing strategy to come out on top. This is certainly aggressive.
