When calculating the amount of work it’ll take to get to number one many companies make the mistake of thinking that putting in the work to get to number there will be a temporary ‘big push’ followed by a more manageable period of maintaining that position. Unfortunately that logic fails to take into account the incumbent of number one site, your competitor – the element in all this over which you have the least control.
Ask yourself this question, how would you react to suddenly losing the number one spot? Would you pack up and go home or would you redouble your efforts to regain the position? The answer is probably the latter. You can’t expect your competitors to roll over and die. Therefore, any attempt to steal first place must be backed up with a plan to sustain that first place once you have it – this is good SEO practise any way, if efforts aren’t goin g to be maintained there’s not much point doing it at all.
If you’re going for number one, make sure you have the money and man hours available to take the campaign up a gear once the former holder reacts and expect the competition to get fierce. Essentially, if you don’t have the stomach for the fight you shouldn’t get involved.
