Is sheer weight of Content critical to Ranking success?

We get asked about content an awful lot. People recognise that it’s an integral part of building a successful website, they understand that content drives traffic to a site and generates incoming links like nothing else. However, occasionally people fail to make the distinction between good content and lots of content.

Let’s be clear. Dumping reams and reams of sloppily written material onto your site is going to help no one, least of all your customers. Content is about quality not quantity. Use as many words as it takes to make your point or communicate what you want to say eloquently, and no more. As a second priority to quality and brevity you should focus your content on one or two repeated keywords though remember it still has to read well.

Update content regularly but be sure that it’s relevant – case studies, blogs, FAQs stuff like that. Think about what you’re like when you’re searching, do you enjoy reading hundreds of words of irrelevant information? Probably not. In fact, the chances are you’ll navigate away before getting to something important.

People link to useful, informative or entertaining pages. Thousands of words of filler is only going to annoy your customers, probably in exchange for precisely no links. The rule of thumb is this, keep it relevant and keep it good.
