I’ve spoken on this blog before about my belief in the general quality and accuracy of journalism in the main technology blogs, and about how rare it is for rumours to surface in the (professional) blogosphere that have absolutely no truth to them. Therfore, I was a little surprised by Steve Jobs and Tim Cook’s comments this week. Jobs and Cook, in separate statements, have categorically ruled out both the Apple Netbook and the iPhone Nano, two devices which have been widely predicted by bloggers and analysts for well over a year.
The rumours of the latter were so strong that some case manufacturers even felt justified in designing and marketing iPhone Nano cases. It seems now that those products will remain on the shelves indefinitely.
I guess I shouldn’t be that surprised really, the aforementioned veracity and professionalism of blogs does tend to take a bit of a knock where Apple and Apple products are concerned. There’s just something about that company that inspires an almost religious devotion in people. Real Apple devotees, and there are a fair few, aren’t just happy owning the products, they want to find out about the company – especially when it comes to its future plans.
It’s not hard therefore, to see why Apple stories are so appealing to Bloggers, most of whom fighting for every hit. The unspoken rule in the tabloids used to be, when there’s no news lead with any royal story. It’s the same principle at work in blogs – when you’ve got nothing else, speculate about Apple.
